Our organization began as the result of a community coming together to make a difference. We realize that to create a sustainable community in Floyd County and beyond, we must join our time, creativity, expertise and ideas.
We have been fortunate to have a large, committed group of volunteers including our all volunteer board of directors and community advisors. Plus countless others have donated their time and talents in organizing projects such as the Floyd Community Market, Farm to School and other educational, fundraising and awareness projects.

Our Director
Mike BurtonAttorney, farmer, conservationist
Mike received his Juris Doctorate from Wake Forest University School of Law in 1988 and practiced trial law in North Carolina for 10 years. Owner of Moon Indigo Farm in Floyd County, he served as a board member of the Virginia Association for Biological Farmers until 2008. Before his work with SustainFloyd, he co-founded a local farmer collaborative and grew vegetables that sold through a community supported agriculture (CSA) program. Mike lives in a straw bale, solar-powered, wood-heated home he constructed on the farm, where he raises hogs, lambs and layer chickens and grows much of his family's own food.
