Floyd, Virginia – SustainFloyd will screen the highly acclaimed film, “Buck,” about Buck Brannaman, the original horse whisperer, on Saturday, February 11th at 7 p.m. at the Floyd Country Store. “Buck” won the audience award at the Sundance Film Festival for the best documentary of 2011.

Everyone is invited to this community screening as part of SustainFloyd’s (www.sustainfloyd.org) 2012 Winter Film Series. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and popcorn and baked goods will be provided for donations. Admission is $5. Speakers will follow the screening for those who would like to ask questions.

“Many of us in Floyd County own horses and will find this film fascinating and informative,” says SustainFloyd Director Mike Burton. “But even if you’ve never ridden a horse, this is one movie you don’t want to miss. “Buck,” is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds. It’s about determination, compassion and respect.”

“Buck” follows Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy, from a difficult childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. Brannaman was the inspiration for Robert Redford’s 1998 film, “The Horse Whisperer,” and Redford makes an appearance in this documentary. A visually stunning film, “Buck” has fascinated audiences who have watched Brannaman’s near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses and people.

Following Buck, the SF Winter Film Series will screen “Forks Over Knives,” on Saturday, February 25th at the Floyd Country Store. “Forks Over Knives” explores the link between diet and health.

Award-Winning Documentary “The Economics of Happiness” to be Screened

Floyd, Virginia – SustainFloyd (www.sustainfloyd.org) is inviting everyone to “get happy” and celebrate the holidays with a community potluck dinner and the award-winning documentary “The Economics of Happiness” at the Floyd Country Store at 6 p.m., Thursday, December 8, 2011. Admission is $5. The doors will open at 6:00 p.m. and everyone is invited to bring an entrée, appetizer, side dish or dessert, which will be shared. The movie will be screened at 7 p.m. A panel discussion will follow the documentary for those who want to ask questions. This screening is made possible in part by the generous donation of Pat Sharkey, in honor of all those in the Floyd Community who are in need of a little sunshine and joy.

“The Economics of Happiness,” was winner of Best in Show this year at Gainesville,Florida’s Cinema Verde Environmental Film Festival. The documentary discusses communities such as Floyd coming together to re-build on a more human scale…ecological economies based on localization. This movie is the final documentary of the popular SustainFloyd Fall Film Series. SustainFloyd is also planning a Spring Film Series to begin in February.

“Too often we forget the holidays are supposed to be about making connections with our friends, family and community,” said Jackie Crenshaw, a SustainFloyd Board Member, who is coordinating the dinner and movie. “This is a chance to enjoy a great film, see your neighbors and make new friends over dinner.”

“The Economics of Happiness” offers not only a big-picture analysis of globalization, but a powerful message of hope for the future. Thinkers and activists interviewed for the documentary come from every continent. Their message is unambiguous: in order to respect and revitalize diversity, both cultural and biological, we need to localize economic activity. They argue that a shift – away from globalizing economic activity and towards the local – is a formula that allows us to reduce our ecological footprint while increasing human well-being.

Hear Revealing Research on Floyd’s Energy Usage

Learn about Programs and Methods to Cut Your Energy Bill

Floyd, VA – Concerned about your energy bill this winter? Join energy conservation experts for a free seminar at the Floyd Country Store on Thursday, November 10th at 6:15 p.m. to learn how you can improve the energy efficiency of your home or business. All of us can and should achieve energy efficiency through conservation. Sponsoring this exciting seminar are SustainFloyd, the Association of Energy Conservation Professionals (AECP), the Community Alliance for Energy Efficiency (CAFE2), the Floyd County Economic Development Office, Community Housing Partners (CHP), Wall Residences, The Floyd Country Store, Hotel Floyd and Wall Construction.

Find out how some Floyd County households will be eligible for free assistance to weatherize their homes through the State Weatherization program. Or, you may be eligible for loan assistance from a new program through CAFE2.

Hear how Floyd County uses its energy resources. Dr. Sean McGinnis, who directs the Green Engineering Program at Virginia Tech, will debut an Energy Inventory undertaken by SustainFloyd for the town of Floyd and Floyd County. This inventory consists of home and business electrical usage, transportation fuel data, and propane or home heating oil consumption in both the residential and commercial sector. SustainFloyd plans to use the inventory as a benchmark, which will enable our community and local government(s) to better understand the impact of Floyd County’s energy consumption..

Learn how to cut your energy bill through conservation. Billy Weitzenfeld, Executive Director of AECP, a non-profit energy education and advocacy organization headquartered in Floyd, will discuss “Saving Energy in the Home.” Weitzenfeld will provide tips on how to lower energy costs through conservation, lengthen the life of appliances, save natural resources and preserve the environment.

Gregg Lewis, Director of CAFE2, will describe the steps that all homeowners can take to participate in this new residential home energy performance program. Homeowners who sign up with CAFE2 can access a wide variety of incentives designed to help them pay for home energy assessments and upgrades. Mr. Lewis will outline the ways that those efforts will save homeowners energy and money and make their homes safer and more comfortable. Formed by Community Housing Partners (CHP), CAFE2 offers a robust quality assurance review of all work conducted by the organization’s pool of qualified contractors and guides consumers through every step of the CAFE2 process.

The final speaker will be Bill Beachy, Vice President of CHP Energy Services. Mr. Beachy will discuss CHP’s Weatherization program, which reduces energy costs for low-income families by optimizing energy efficiency in the home, while assessing and eliminating related health and safety issues.

Come join us to learn more about programs available to support your personal energy efficiency goals and those of our community!
