A national program, Farm to School creates a sustainable market for Floyd farmers and teaches our children how fresh food is grown and produced. If Floyd County farmers supplied 20 – 40% of the food served in the school cafeterias each day, it would be profitable for our local agricultural economy and provide fresh, nutritious food to our schoolchildren. All while avoiding high transportation costs and greenhouse gas emissions. In October 2009, three fifth-grade classes in Floyd County participated in a Farm-to-School pilot program at a local organic farm. SustainFloyd has also worked in cooperation with the New River Valley Community Services to obtain funding to expand the county’s childhood obesity prevention programs.
