We have endeavored to bring important issues into the spotlight, beginning with our very first public meeting was entitled “The Future of Floyd.” The event was intended to provide a format for citizens to envision and discuss the direction our community should take. We have twice sponsored nationally known organic farmer Jeff Poppin for local workshops, and a talk by internationally known writer, environmentalist and activist Bill McKibben.
Recently, we hosted a presentation by the Director of Landcare International, a global organization with a mandate to sustain and protect farmlands and rural environments. Through our director and board members, we have addressed many groups and conferences in relation to our mission and related issues. We had a primary role in the New River Food Security Conference and also participated in two international events to draw attention to issues of climate change and environmental activism. These were 350.org and more recently the 10-10-10 work program. All these events were free to the public and helped provide useful information needed to make informed decisions about important issues facing Floyd and the world we live in.
